Texas cop directing traffic struck by hit-and-run drunk driver

The series of tragic events began early one recent morning when law enforcement officials received a call that a man was walking near an interstate highway. When officers arrived, they found the body of a 25-year-old man who had apparently been struck by a vehicle that did not stop.

The incident about six hours north of Edinburg took another dark twist, however. A police officers who was directing traffic around the site of the pedestrian accident was also struck by a vehicle. The driver of that car also did not stop.

The 18-year veteran officers was hospitalized in serious condition. The extent of his injuries was not disclosed in the news article about the incidents, however.

Believe it or not, there was another strange occurrence took place at the scene of those two motor vehicle accidents. Police officers and others were working at the scene when lightning struck, shocking two officers and a support technician, according to the news report.

All three were hospitalized. The extent of their injuries was also not part of the news report.

According to the article, law enforcement officials have identified the second hit-and-run driver (the one who allegedly struck the police officers) as a 65-year-old man. When he is taken into custody, he will be charged with intoxication assault.

Texas law requires drivers to slow down to 20 miles below the speed limit or to move over a lane when they come upon stopped police cars, emergency vehicles, state road crews and tow trucks with their lights flashing.
