Texas A&M’s men’s basketball team has had an up and down season with tough losses to teams it should have beaten balanced by impressive wins over the likes of Auburn and the University of Kentucky. The Aggies were recently dealt a couple of blows in an off-court incident when one player was dismissed and another suspended after the two were recently arrested.
A pair of Texas A&M police officers spotted a car containing three men in an otherwise empty parking lot just before midnight. The three included freshman guards J.J. Caldwell and Jay Chandler. They were accompanied by a 19-year-old friend. All three were arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
That might seem like a minor charge to some people, but the reality is that it resulted in Caldwell’s dismissal from the team and Chandler’s suspension. No one knows yet the full effects the punishments will have on their academic pursuits or their basketball careers.
Caldwell was one of the nation’s top point guard prospects when he was recruited to the university two years ago. Factoring into his dismissal was his arrest nearly a year ago on a driving while intoxicated charge.
After the recent arrest, he issued an apology, conceding that he has “done this to myself.”
Chandler is still with the team, but suspended indefinitely.
