Texas cop charged with driving while intoxicated

by | Jan 2, 2018 | Drunk Driving |

If you drive northeast of Edinburg for about 6 and a half hours, you will come to an appropriately named Texas city called Texas City. The Galveston County city of about 45,000 residents is a deep-water port on the Gulf Coast.

Texas City is also a place where some police officers sometimes struggle to obey the law. Take for example the cop there arrested for DWI early this morning. Arresting officers reported that the cop slammed his vehicle head-on into a stopped pick-up.

The officers was off-duty at the time and was reportedly behind the wheel of his own pick-up when the crash occurred in the early morning hours. Responding colleagues found the cop in his truck and reported that he appeared to be drunk.

The driver of the other pick-up was waiting to turn when his vehicle was struck. He was not injured in the crash.

According to a news report, the DWI arrest is just the latest black eye for the police department. About a year ago, a former Texas City cop was indicted for felony theft after allegedly stealing $2,000 from a dying man who was on his way to buy Christmas presents.

The man’s wife had given him $2,400 in $100 bills, but he was found unresponsive in his vehicle on the side of the road. The grandfather was taken to a hospital, where he died.

A responding officers took $100 back to the man’s wife along with a few $1 bills, saying it was all he had recovered from the dying man. The man’s family filed suit against the former cop, accusing him of stealing $2,300.

He was later indicted — and resigned from the police force — after video from his own body camera appeared to show him taking money from the dying man’s pocket.

We do not know what the outcomes of these cases will turn out to be, but we do know that no matter how bad things might sound in a newspaper article, everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

In many situations, an experienced criminal defense attorney can help the accused avoid the harshest available punishments, even when the accused has made mistakes and broken the law.
