The dangers of distracted driving

by | Nov 16, 2017 | Car Accidents |

As anyone who has driven on Interstate 2 knows, traffic moves quickly in and around Edinburg. When someone isn’t paying full attention to other vehicles, pedestrians, traffic signs and weather, motor vehicle accidents, injuries and fatalities can occur.

One of the leading causes of crashes: drivers who are paying more attention to their phones than traffic and the roads. A recent survey by Consumer Reports says that 41 percent of drivers with smart phones admit that they have engaged in texting while driving.

Another 8 percent of Americans surveyed said they have even watched a video while they were behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.

Some people think technology can solve the problem it has created. Hands-free tech is believed by many to reduce the risks of distracted driving crashes. But a professor of cognition and neural science at the University of Utah says hands-free systems can be just as dangerous as handheld devices. He says that our brains can be more engaged in the interaction with the hands-free system than with driving.

Consumer Reports said its survey of 622 drivers with smart phones showed that more than half (52 percent) admit they engage in distracting activities while they’re behind the wheel. Distractions include texting (41 percent), playing music on their phones (37 percent), reading/sending email or using a web browser (20 percent) and watching a video (8 percent).

As you know, Texas recently enacted a ban on texting while driving. While the ban might well reduce the number of distracted driving wrecks, many believe even more must be done to protect motorists from risks posed by distracted drivers.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a motor vehicle accident caused by a distracted driver, you can fight for justice and full compensation with the help of an attorney experienced in personal injury litigation.
