The Texas Penal Code name for the violation does not at first glance sound all that serious: “Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student.” But a conviction on the sex crime charge can mean a very serious sentence of up to 20 years in a state prison.
That is a possibility a San Antonio high school math teacher faces after her recent arrest, The 52-year-old is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.
After her arrest, the math teacher at Claudia Taylor Johnson High School was taken to Bexar County Jail, where she reportedly remains. Bail has been set at $20,000.
According to law enforcement officials, she was the teen’s teacher and case manager last year. She also reportedly tutored then-freshman in math at a public library.
A TV station news report stated that police said in the arrest affidavit that the teacher allowed the student to move into her home in early summer of 2016. At some point, it is alleged, they began a sexual relationship.
Police say the woman has admitted to having sex with the teenager about 15 to 20 times in the past year. Their most recent encounter, she apparently told officials, was in late summer of this year.
We do not know under what conditions the woman made the statements to police, but we do know that before a person accused of a serious crime speaks with police or prosecutors, they should talk with a criminal defense attorney. An experienced defense lawyer will protect a client’s interests and rights throughout the legal process.
