If you drive from Edinburg northeast along the Gulf coast for a few hours, you will come to Porter, Texas. A freelance photographer who works for a Houston TV station was recently driving on a stretch of road near Porter when he saw something very unusual: a pick-up truck drifted across the center line toward oncoming traffic, then off of the road entirely, and then careened back onto FM 1314.
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies later arrested the man and charged him with driving while intoxicated.
The incident was captured on video by the photographer, including a near-miss head-on collision and a portion of the driver’s attempt to complete a roadside sobriety test.
The photographer followed the erratic driver for about 10 minutes before other drivers eventually boxed the defendant’s vehicle in.
According to the news report, however, the man was experiencing a medical condition and was taken to a nearby medical center for treatment. The article did not state what condition had been affecting him and what role it might have played in his erratic driving or impairment.
According to the KHOU TV report, Montgomery County has the highest rate of impaired driving in Texas.
The county sheriff said that drunken driving “is a 100 percent preventable crime that happens way too often here.”
Those charged with drunk driving face possible jail time, large fines, mandated installation of an ignition interlock device, suspension of your driver’s license and more. You can contact an Edinburg criminal defense attorney about effective DUI defense.
