Concussion diagnosis after a motor vehicle accident

If you're involved in a motor vehicle accident, it's your hope that you don't suffer an injury. However, depending on the circumstances, you could find yourself dealing with several serious injuries that require immediate medical attention.

If you suspect a concussion after a motor vehicle accident, it's critical to head for a local hospital for examination and treatment. Your medical team will diagnose you by doing the following:

  • Neurological evaluation: Your doctor will check your hearing, vision, balance, strength, reflexes and coordination.
  • Cognitive testing: This evaluates your concentration, memory and ability to recall information.
  • Imaging tests: A CT scan is the most commonly used imaging test, but an MRI and X-ray may be necessary depending on the circumstances of the accident and the results of your neurological evaluation and cognitive testing.

Once your doctor runs all the necessary tests, they'll have a better idea of if you have a concussion and/or any other brain injuries. Armed with this information, they will decide what type of treatment is best both now and in the future.

Your doctor may request that you stay overnight in the hospital for observation, thereby ensuring you're healthy enough to go home in the near future and treat yourself.

After receiving treatment, learn more about the cause of the accident. You can do so by reviewing it in your mind, while also requesting a copy of the police report. This is also the right time to contact your insurance agent to file a claim.

If another person caused the accident, you may also want to look into the steps for filing a personal injury claim.
