(Rubber?) gloves off before DWI arrest

The McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs says that the expression "take one's gloves off" means that a person has decided “to stop being calm or civil and show an intention of winning a dispute by any means." The old expression certainly appears to apply to the recent arrest of a Texas man for DWI and other charges.

The Denton man arrested is apparently the owner of a club known as the Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. The gloves came off in his encounter with a former employee, police said. The club owner is accused of punching his former employee in the eye outside of a bar.

Rubber Gloves apparently closed its doors about a year and a half ago, but according to a news article on the arrest, there are rumors that the popular music venue will soon reopen.

According to the article, the former employee was smoking a cigarette outside of a club with a friend. The Rubber Gloves owner approached them. The owner accused his former employee of blowing smoke in his face, and proceeded to punch him in the left eye.

When police later located him, he reportedly admitted to punching the other man. Law enforcement officials said that the owner smelled of alcohol and a field sobriety test was administered. He was then arrested for drunk driving and assault.

As you know, a first-offense DWI conviction (with a blood-alcohol level below .15 percent) can mean a jail sentence of up to 180 days, plus a fine of up to $2,000 and a driver's license suspension of up to 365 days. If the BAC is above .15 percent, fines and jail time can be doubled.

If you have been arrested for drunken driving, contact an attorney experienced in DWI defense to discuss your legal options.
