Former TCU QB facing drug charge in DWI case

It is a long, long drive from Edinburg to the campus of Texas Christian University, but for fans of the school's football team, distance does not diminish their devotion to the Horned Frogs and head coach Gary Patterson.

One of Patterson's best players was quarterback Trevone Boykin, who led the team to some of its greatest successes. Boykin was recently arrested on a marijuana possession charge while police were investigating a DWI accident in which several pedestrians were injured.

According to news reports, Boykin was a passenger in a car driven by a 25-year-old woman who is accused of crashing her vehicle into a Dallas County building and striking several pedestrians. Law enforcement officials say the woman was drunk at the time of the crash.

Police say she was accelerating the vehicle at high speed while driving in reverse. Seven people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after the crash.

News reports say Boykin left the scene of the crash, but after he was contacted by phone, he returned. According to police, he was unsteady on his feet and argumentative. Boykin was booked for public intoxication and after police found a bag containing marijuana apparently belonging to the former TCU standout, he was also charged with a Class B misdemeanor of possession of marijuana of less than 2 ounces.

Boykin is now a back-up QB with the Seattle Seahawks.

The driver has been charged with two charges of a third-degree felony: intoxication assault with a vehicle.

We do not know how these charges will be resolved, but it is clear that for both defendants, the stakes are high. Boykin's NFL career might hang in the balance and the driver's freedom is at risk.

Those facing similar predicaments can speak with an Edinburg criminal defense attorney experienced in drug crime defense, DWI defense and more.
